Safeguarding Conference success in Perth

Over 100 people attended the Scottish Episcopal Church’s first Safeguarding Conference this week when it was held at St Matthews Church in Perth.

The conference itself was a trial of a new concept bringing a mix of training, practice updates and an opportunity to get together and share experience. Bishop Ian Paton graciously agreed to the Conference being trialled within his Diocese and he opened the event, took part all day and closed the day, with a message of hope moving forward.

Attendance was excellent, with representation from every charge in the Diocese of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane, along with the Diocese Protection Officers from each of the other dioceses in the Province and a small number of other guests.

The day consisted of four main sessions:

  • Training session on Safeguarding Fundamentals
  • PVG practice update
  • Practical session on Safeguarding Agreements
  • Input from Police Scotland on personal safety

There was lively engagement all day, with a chance for delegates to meet and socialise as well as learn. Early reaction has been very positive, and feedback will be used to inform future similar events in future.

John Wyllie, Head of Safeguarding (pictured right) said: “The aim of the day was to help to develop the practice of Safeguarding in an inclusive manner as possible. Safeguarding is a team effort and everyone in the SEC has an important part to play as we move forward together. It is only by working together, speaking honestly about concerns, listening and considering how our actions affect others that we can make our church as safe as possible for everyone.

“I want to extend particular thanks to Bishop Ian, the Rev Ian Boa and all of the Diocese of St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane team for making the day possible and so enjoyable.”
