The life and contribution of Frederick Pugh will be celebrated in music once again at St Mary’s Episcopal Church, Hamilton (Auchingramont Road, ML3 6JT) this Saturday, November 25th at 4pm, after several years of interruption.
Frederick Pugh was hugely influential throughout Lanarkshire for many years around the turn of the twentieth century: he was a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and Organist and Choirmaster at St Mary’s; additionally, he founded the organisation that is now Hamilton Operatic and Dramatic Club, and was Hamilton’s Town Organist.
Pugh’s daughter, Starra, bequeathed a legacy in her father’s name for the provision of music at St Mary’s, and the Frederick Pugh Memorial Concert was instigated.
This concert has been a fixture in St Mary’s calendar for many years and, as befits Frederick Pugh’s particular association with the church, always features choral and organ music. The Choirs of St Mary’s will perform music by three composers, all of whom have an anniversary in 2023: William Byrd, Thomas Weelkes and Max Reger.
All are welcome to this special occasion. Admission by donation programme (£7/5/1).
